Berria Beach, in Santoña, is a stretch of sand nearly 2 kilometres long that runs between the town and Monte Buciero, with dunes, free parking right by the sand, toilets, showers and lifeguards in the summer season. It's about 20 minutes by car from Bareyo via the CA-141.
Of all the beaches near Bareyo, Berria best represents the scale of the Trasmiera coast: a long, open stretch with plenty of room even in the middle of August, backed at one end by Monte Buciero and at the other by the dunes separating it from the Santoña marshes. It's not a hidden cove or an urban beach: it's the big beach of the area, the one chosen by those looking for space to lay a towel without fighting for a spot. What Berria Beach is like
The sand stretches for almost 2 kilometres and several dozen metres wide at low tide, enough that even on the busiest August days you can find a quiet spot with just a few minutes' walk from the main access points. The sand is fine and golden, and the seabed slopes gradually, without sudden drops, making it comfortable for swimming with children as long as the waves aren't too strong. At the northern end, towards the Faro del Caballo, the beach narrows between the rocks of Monte Buciero, a wilder area with fewer people than the central stretch, and with somewhat stronger currents worth respecting if you're not a strong swimmer.
Parking and how to get there from Bareyo
From Bareyo, Berria is about 20 minutes by car via the CA-141 towards Santoña. There's free parking next to the beach, though spaces are limited and they tend to fill up by mid-morning in July and August; arriving before 9:30am or after 5pm makes it easier to find a spot. There's also a paid, attended car park with direct access to the sand, open from May to October, which is the more convenient option if you're travelling with children or a lot of beach gear.
Facilities, lifeguards and access
The beach has toilets, showers and sunbed and umbrella rental in high season. The lifeguard service runs in summer, usually from 11:30am to 8:30pm, a window during which dogs aren't allowed on the beach; outside those hours and season, they are allowed as long as they're on a lead and supervised. The main access points are fitted with wooden walkways over the dunes, though it isn't a beach with adapted access for amphibious wheelchairs like others in the area. Tides and the best time to visit Berria Beach
The Cantabrian Sea has tidal ranges of up to 4-5 metres, and at Berria the difference is very noticeable: at low tide, the sand stretches out and firm areas appear that are perfect for walking or playing with children; at high tide, the water can reach the line of dunes at the narrowest points. It's worth checking the tide tables before you go, especially if you're planning to stay several hours, so you're not caught out by the rising water on the northern stretch, near Monte Buciero.
