The municipality of Bareyo has something few places in Spain can claim: the sea five minutes away, with nothing to give up for it. Green hills, quiet villages and some of the most authentic beaches in Cantabria, without the crowds of the Mediterranean.
This is the beach guide we use ourselves, no tourist filter.
Playa de Ajo (Cuberris) — the go-to beach
The municipality's main beach. Golden sand, Atlantic waters and a setting of cliffs and meadows you won't find in southern Spain.
It's ideal for families: lifeguard on duty in high season, plenty of parking and easy access right down to the water's edge. The waves are consistent and good quality, suited to surfers of every level.

Playa de Antuerta — the best-kept secret
300 metres from Cuberris along a five-minute coastal path. 150 metres of fine golden sand surrounded by cliffs. There's no way to drive in, which means it's never crowded.
Perfect for a quiet morning with kids or a peaceful afternoon. The path linking Cuberris and Antuerta has views over the Cantabrian Sea that are worth the walk on their own.

- Access: on foot from Cuberris, 5 minutes along the coastal path
- Facilities: none, bring everything you need
- Best for: quiet, snorkelling, families without very young children
Playa de Noja — the most complete in the area
15 minutes from Bareyo. The biggest and best-equipped beach in the area: over 2 kilometres of sand, calm waters and every facility. The go-to beach destination for families with young children who want comfort without giving up the natural surroundings.

Playa de Langre — for something different
In Ribamontán al Mar, 20 minutes away. One of the most spectacular beaches in Cantabria: an amphitheatre open to the Cantabrian Sea, with green meadows running right up to the cliff edge.
Fewer facilities than Noja, more character. The kind of beach you make your own for the afternoon, with no one bothering you.

- Best for: couples, photographers, hikers, sunsets
El Faro de Ajo — the stop that isn't optional
Technically not a beach, but you can't be in Bareyo without visiting it. El Faro de Ajo sits on a headland with 360-degree views over the Cantabrian Sea. Its murals by artist Okuda San Miguel have made it one of Cantabria's photographic icons.
Five minutes from the villas. Perfect for an afternoon with the kids or to start the day before heading to the beach.
Practical tips for families and groups
Best time for swimming: July and August. The Cantabrian Sea doesn't go above 20-22ºC in summer — brisk, but perfect if you're coming from the heat of inland Spain.
For large groups: Cuberris is the most convenient option, with plenty of parking and direct access. Noja if the kids are very young.
Local tip: get there early. Bareyo's beaches fill up in August from 11h onward. Before 10h, you've got the sand to yourself.
