To try sport caving near Bareyo, the closest option is VALCAN, in Argoños, less than 15 minutes by car, with guided beginner routes in the Alto Asón valley that require no previous experience. Cantabria Activa, in Pechón, offers a family-friendly alternative a little over an hour away, with prices starting from around €40 per person.
Cantabria's underground world has a reputation that few visitors know about: the Cueto-Coventosa system, in the Asón valley, links together more than 35 kilometres of galleries and 815 metres of vertical drop, and is considered one of the most important cave systems in Europe. The reason is geological: much of the region's interior sits on limestone bedrock, and water has spent millions of years carving out cracks, chambers and underground rivers beneath the very same valleys where people go hiking or mushroom-picking today. As Turismo de Cantabria itself notes, the Asón-Agüera area is one of the go-to destinations internationally for caving.
You don't need to be a licensed caver to get a glimpse of that world: several adventure tourism companies run guided beginner trips, with gear, a helmet with a headlamp and insurance all included. The difference from caves you visit on foot, like Altamira or El Soplao, is that here you crawl in, cross drops on rope on the longer routes, and at some point everyone switches off their headlamps to experience total darkness, without a hint of light from outside. These are beginner routes designed for groups with no experience, running two to three hours depending on the option, not technical expeditions for specialists.

VALCAN, in Argoños: caving in Cantabria a stone's throw from Bareyo
VALCAN (Cantabria Turismo Activo) is based in Argoños, a quarter of an hour from Bareyo, and runs caving, canyoning and via ferrata trips from there around the Asón valley and the Ramales de la Victoria area, where some of the region's best-known caves are found, including Coventosa itself and Cueva Mur. Guides tailor the route to the group's level, from a simple beginner cave walk to routes that already require moving on rope, and usually run the activity as a half-day trip, leaving the rest of the day free to eat in any of the villages of Trasmiera.

Cantabria Activa, in Pechón: the family-friendly two-hour option
A bit further away, at the western edge of the region, Cantabria Activa runs caving trips in the Cueva del Nozal and Cueva del Nanzal, in Pechón, with two options: a family route of around two hours designed as an easy introduction, and a three-hour route for anyone after something more complete. It includes a qualified guide, insurance, changing rooms with hot showers and all the technical gear, and can be booked from €40 per person. As the option furthest from Bareyo, many families combine it with a visit to San Vicente de la Barquera, just ten minutes away, for lunch and a look around the town before heading back.

What you need to know
- Neither route requires previous experience; both companies offer beginner options for groups and families.
- VALCAN, in Argoños, is the closest option to Bareyo (about 15 minutes) and mainly works the Alto Asón valley, near Ramales de la Victoria.
- Cantabria Activa, in Pechón, is a little over an hour away and has a two-hour family option as well as the full route.
- The technical gear (helmet, headlamp, overalls and harness on the rope routes) is included in the price; you just need clothes you don't mind getting wet and muddy, and closed shoes you don't mind ruining.
- It's worth booking ahead, especially on weekends: groups tend to be kept small for safety reasons, so spots fill up fast in high season.
