The Trasmiera Ecopark is an open-air museum spread across Arnuero, Isla, Castillo and Soano, a few kilometres from Bareyo. It brings together four interpretation centres —art, tide, memory and the Casa de las Mareas— and trails through salt marshes, estuaries and cliffs. You can visit it in half a day.

Arnuero is Bareyo's neighbouring municipality and one of the few in Cantabria that has turned its entire territory into something you can visit. They call it the Trasmiera Ecopark, a project of the town council that has given new use to buildings that had lost theirs: a church, a tide mill, a traditions centre.

It isn't a theme park and it has no entrance gate. It's a way of exploring the municipality with stops that explain what you're looking at: why the tide rules this landscape, who carved the altarpieces of the region, what people did here before the beaches and the visitors arrived.

We recommend it above all for an autumn day or one with light rain, when the coast calls for a slow-paced plan.

Observatorio del Arte: the 1542 altarpiece in Arnuero

The easiest centre to grasp is the Observatorio del Arte, housed in the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Arnuero. It's an educational exhibition about the master builders of Trasmiera, a region with a long tradition of stonemasons and building masters.

The piece that justifies the visit is the main altarpiece of 1542, the work of Simón de Bueras, considered the most important Plateresque altarpiece in Cantabria. Its scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin are of great quality and can be seen up close, which is unusual.

Opening hours according to the Ecopark website: from 15 June to 15 September, Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 2 pm and 5 pm to 8 pm; the rest of the year, Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 2 pm and 4 pm to 7 pm, except Sunday afternoons. Admission is given as between 3 and 4 euros depending on the source, with discounts if you combine centres.

Casa de las Mareas in Soano: the salt marsh explained

The Casa de las Mareas, in Soano, is the Ecopark's main reception centre and the best place to start if you come curious about nature. It's at Barrio La Llama, 10, and the Ecopark's contact number is 676 486 111.

The centre is devoted to the salt marsh ecosystem: the ebb and flow of the tide and the life that organises itself on the edge between land and sea. The visit changes the way you look at the municipality's estuaries and marshes, such as the Ría de Quejo and the Marisma Joyel.

If you've walked around the area without knowing what you were looking at, this stop is the one that makes sense of the trails.

Observatorio de la Marea and Observatorio de la Memoria: the mill and the traditions

The other two centres complete the story. The Molino de Mareas de Santa Olaja, or Observatorio de la Marea, is devoted to the force of the tide and how it has been harnessed on the coast. And the Centro de Tradiciones «Salvador Hedilla», in Castillo, works as the Observatorio de la Memoria: a space dedicated to the traditions of the region.

These are shorter visits than the previous two. That's why they work well combined in a single outing, and why it's worth asking about discounts for a joint ticket.

How to organise your visit to the Trasmiera Ecopark

A sensible route starts at the Casa de las Mareas, continues to the Observatorio del Arte and leaves the mill and the traditions centre for last, depending on the time you have. With half a day you can see two centres at a relaxed pace; with the whole day, all four plus a walk along the coast.

Opening hours differ from centre to centre and vary by season, so check before you go on the Ecopark's official website or with the Arnuero town council, which runs it.

If you have the afternoon left over, Arnuero's coast has beaches very close by. If you liked what you saw here, add our guide to the beaches of Arnuero to your list.
