Near Bareyo you can go horse riding at three different spots, each with its own take: Posada de Ajo, right in the village, offers rides around its own estate; Evecan Safari Aventura, in Noja, lets you ride a horse or a dromedary through a wildlife reserve; and Centro Hípico La Espina, in the Valles Pasiegos, runs guided routes lasting several hours.
Bareyo is surrounded by landscape that invites you to take it slow: marshes, meadows and small valleys separating the coast from Cantabria's green interior. We already know the area well on foot or by bike thanks to our cycling routes near Bareyo, but seeing it from the back of a horse changes the pace entirely, and it's one of the activities most requested by people staying in the area over the summer months, especially families with children looking for something different from a day at the beach. Most of these routes can also be booked at short notice, which comes in handy when the plan comes together at the last minute in the middle of August.
No previous experience is needed in most cases: the riding schools and equestrian tourism centres in the area, some of them listed in Cantabria's active tourism calendar, work with calm horses, always accompanied by a guide, and adapt the route for first-time riders. What does change quite a bit is the type of experience depending on where you choose: a short ride around an estate isn't the same as a multi-hour route through the interior, so before booking it's worth knowing what each one offers and how far it actually is from where you're staying.
Posada de Ajo: horse riding without leaving Bareyo
Posada de Ajo, in Barrio San Roque, runs horse rides on its own estate, the same area where its rural accommodation is. It's the most convenient option if you're staying nearby: no need to travel to another village or book weeks ahead, and the setting combines meadows, a stretch of woodland and views towards the Ajo coast. They also offer quad routes on the same estate, so it's a good starting point if you want to combine several activities in one morning without taking the car. Since it's a private estate, it's worth confirming times and availability directly with them, especially in high season.
Evecan Safari Aventura: horse or dromedary in a nature reserve (Noja)
About 15-20 minutes from Bareyo, in Soano (Arnuero), Evecan Safari Aventura offers a different experience: the route is done on horseback or riding a dromedary, crossing a biological reserve home to deer, fallow deer, bison, buffalo and alpacas before climbing up to the mountains of Cabo de Quejo, with views over the Cantabrian cliffs. The route lasts between 45 and 50 minutes and requires no previous experience, which makes it especially convenient for families with children or larger groups. Since it lies within the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Nature Reserve, the landscape you cross is different from the rest of the options in the area: more open, with wildlife in view for almost the whole route.
Centro Hípico La Espina: horse riding routes in inland Cantabria
If you'd rather get away from the coast altogether, Centro Hípico La Espina is in San Martín de Villafufre, about 45 minutes from Bareyo, right in the heart of the Valles Pasiegos. It's a more established equestrian tourism centre than the others: they run guided routes through meadows, woodland and riverbanks, with stops in villages like Aloños, and also offer individual riding lessons for anyone who wants to learn before taking on a longer route. The maximum weight per rider is usually capped at 100 kg, worth bearing in mind if you're going as a group. It's the option furthest removed from a day-at-the-beach plan, more geared towards a full half-day or full-day excursion for those who already have some riding experience or want to learn properly.

What you need to know: book a few days ahead in July and August, when these centres fill up the most. Wear long trousers and closed shoes even if it's hot, and keep in mind that almost all of them set a weight or minimum age limit that's worth confirming when booking. Prices vary a lot depending on length: from one-hour individual lessons to half-day routes, so confirm exactly what each rate includes before paying. If you're going with young children, ask about short guided walking routes, which are usually the most common choice for first-timers. And if the group has riders with different levels of experience, mention it when booking: most of these centres can split the group into different paces so no one gets left behind.

Exploring the area at a different pace, at a walk, between marshes and meadows, is a different way of getting to know the surroundings where Bareyo Residences is being built.
