Camino Escena Norte is a touring performing arts festival that, in its eighth edition, travels through nine towns in Cantabria between 19 September and 7 November 2026. Two of those stops, Santoña and Laredo, are less than half an hour's drive from Bareyo.
Bareyo sits right on the Camino de Santiago del Norte, so any cultural project that uses this route as its thread finds a natural audience here. Camino Escena Norte is exactly that: a performing arts tour that, over eight editions now, has brought theatre, dance, contemporary circus, puppetry and magic to towns and cities across Cantabria, with guest companies from other regions the Camino also passes through.
The 2026 edition brings together 18 companies from Cantabria, Galicia, Asturias, the Basque Country, Navarre and La Rioja — six regions linked by that same pilgrimage route. Between 19 September and 7 November, its shows will tour Santander, Marina de Cudeyo, Los Corrales de Buelna, Santoña, Torrelavega, Astillero, Laredo, Reinosa and Unquera, already looking ahead to the Holy Jacobean Year in 2027.
This isn't a festival built for big auditoriums: the shows take place in small and medium-sized theatres and cultural centres, with limited capacity and a far more intimate feel than a typical commercial tour.
What Camino Escena Norte is and when it takes place in 2026
The festival began as an artistic exchange programme between the regions the Camino de Santiago crosses, and this eighth edition is organised under the motto «Latidos escénicos» (Stage Heartbeats). Each participating region contributes part of its professional stage production, so the final catalogue brings together 36 recommended shows, six from each region.
In Cantabria, performances run between 19 September and 7 November 2026 across nine municipalities, with a different company at each stop. It's a format designed to discover theatre that doesn't usually reach Cantabrian stages, without having to leave the region. The project also arrives at a symbolic moment: in 2027 the Holy Door of Santiago Cathedral opens and the next Holy Jacobean Year begins, so this tour also works as a small cultural preview of the Camino's big year.
The stops in Santoña and Laredo
Of the nine towns on the route, two are closest to Bareyo. In Santoña, just over 20 minutes by car, the Teatro Casino Liceo hosts the staging of Juana I de Castilla, by the La Rioja company Nueve Lunas Teatro, a historical production centred on the daughter of the Catholic Monarchs.
In Laredo, half an hour by road, the Casa de Cultura Doctor Velasco welcomes the Basque company Ados Teatroa on 23 October with 52 hercios, a theatre show for all audiences that also works well with children. Both are small venues, so if either show interests you, it's worth not leaving the tickets until the last minute.
Other stops on the tour across Cantabria
The rest of the route covers Santander, Marina de Cudeyo, Los Corrales de Buelna, Torrelavega, Astillero, Reinosa and Unquera, each with its own guest company on the programme. If your stay in Bareyo runs several days or falls on a different weekend than Santoña's or Laredo's, it's worth checking the full calendar before ruling out the other shows — some are closer than they look via the A-8 motorway. Torrelavega and Los Corrales de Buelna, for instance, are less than 40 minutes from Bareyo on the A-8, so if you're staying a full week it's easy to fit in two different shows without giving up a beach day.

Nine municipalities, six autonomous regions and one shared thread: the Camino de Santiago, which also literally passes right by Bareyo's door.
