The Battle of the Flowers in Laredo takes place during Laredo's Semana Grande. In 2026, Semana Grande runs from 24 to 30 August, and the Battle of the Flowers falls on Friday, 28 August 2026. Fourteen floats covered in natural flowers parade at 5:00 pm along the Alameda de Miramar, with free admission for the public.

Every last Friday in August, Laredo becomes Cantabria's floral showcase. Thousands of people crowd the Alameda de Miramar to watch fourteen floats covered inch by inch in natural flowers, pinned on one by one just hours before the parade. It's the event that closes out summer on the eastern coast, and if you're coming from Bareyo, it's an easy afternoon trip.

The festival has more than a century of history, and in 2026 it reaches its 115th edition, held within Laredo's first-ever Semana Grande, from 24 to 30 August. Besides the parade there are free concerts on the Alameda, fireworks over Salvé beach, and a closing day built for families with children. Here's what to see, when, and how to get there from Bareyo without missing a thing.

History of the Battle of the Flowers: from rowing boats to floats

The Battle of the Flowers was born in 1908, in the middle of the Belle Époque, when Laredo was betting heavily on summer tourism and looking for a festival that would project that elegant image to the rest of Spain. The first edition was held at sea, with 25 rowing boats decked out in flowers, streamers and sweets thrown between vessels. A year later, in 1909, the parade moved onto land, to Calle Menéndez Pelayo, and that's where the festival as we know it today was born. It has repeated almost without interruption every last Friday in August ever since, and is declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest. You can check the full official programme on the Laredo Turismo website.

2026 Semana Grande programme: what else to do besides the parade

Laredo's Semana Grande kicks off on Monday 24 August with the opening address and a free Fangoria concert on the Alameda Miramar. On Friday 28, the main day, the Battle of the Flowers is followed by a performance from Orquesta Mondragón and Andy from 10:00 pm, and at midnight fireworks light up Salvé beach, visible from the whole seafront promenade. Saturday brings Kiko Veneno and Huecco to the stage, and on Sunday 30 the festival wraps up with a family programme of bouncy castles, kids' workshops and the closing send-off. If you're travelling with young children, this last day is usually the calmest one to come to, without Friday's crowds.

The float parade: what you'll see

Category A floats, the biggest ones, can carry between 150,000 and 180,000 natural flowers each, placed by hand in the hours beforehand so they reach the parade fresh. This year 14 floats take part, accompanied by brass bands and comparsas, on a route around the Alameda de Miramar that starts at 5:00 pm. The trick to seeing it comfortably is to arrive with at least an hour to spare and find a spot on the seaward side of the promenade, where there's usually a bit more room. The floats' preview display, normally held the day before the parade, is a calmer alternative for seeing them up close and taking in the floral detail without Friday afternoon's crowds.

How to get there and park from Bareyo

Laredo is about 25 kilometres from Bareyo, around 25 minutes by car on the A-8. On parade day the town centre fills up fast, so it's worth arriving with time to spare: the car park behind the Juzgado (courthouse), accessed from Calle Comandante Villar, usually has space even in the middle of the afternoon and is a short walk from the Alameda de Miramar. If you'd rather not rely on the car to get back at night after the fireworks, parking in the upper part of town and walking down to the seafront promenade is usually quicker than looking for parking near the route at the last minute.

"Each large float can carry up to 180,000 natural flowers, pinned on one by one in the hours before the parade."

Coming back from the Alameda de Miramar with your ears still ringing with brass band music, and finding the quiet of the Trasmiera coast half an hour later, sums up pretty well why so many families choose this corner of Cantabria to spend the summer. Bareyo is close enough to Laredo that you won't miss a single firework, and far enough that on the way back, all you'll hear is the sea. If you're thinking about a permanent base to live like this every August, the villas at Bareyo Residences will be available to reserve from September 2027.
